Amwell Magna Fly Fishing Club is a little slice of heaven on the old River Lea, not that far from where I used to fish as a kid. Though I don’t think they would have let us on there with two pints of maggots back in the day! Beautiful, steeped in history and not far from London it is a peaceful haven that I have been fortunate to cast the occasional fly on in recent years.

I have been lucky enough to have been a member of Amwell Magna and enjoyed every moment there. Since then, it has been so pleasing to see it go from strength to strength and under the guidance of the committee, build a club that members can enjoy while still ensuring that the water, fish and wildlife have a habitat they can thrive in. I still remember sliding down the banks of the Ash to net a fish one Sunday. The stinging nettles burns were a happy reminder of the moment for a few days but the memory of the fish lasts to this day.
I have the great honour of serving as President of the club. I’m not sure I make a very good president as I can’t keep my eyes off the water when I’m there and am endlessly distracted from presidential duties by mating mayflies and rising wildies; I’m first and foremost an angler and find myself in excellent company at Amwell Magna, surrounded by folk who’d rather be fishing than doing anything else. Although I’ve been fishing at the club for some ten years now I still have to pinch myself every time I unlock the metal gate and step inside our little fishy world, a world richly enhanced by the work of river keeper Martin while last season’s bumper catch returns are proof that this historic club is flowing very nicely into the future.
