About

Amwell Magna Fishery is the custodian of 2.5 miles of the River Lea – all classified as a chalk stream – together with the lower reach of the River Ash as it joins the Lea and a short stretch of the Stanstead Millstream that leads to the nearby village of Stansted Abbotts.

Our part of the Lea is a haven for wild brown trout and is noted for being the nearest breeding population to London. In recent years the club has reintroduced grayling as part of a three year project with the Environment Agency and we now regularly see wild grayling using the well maintained redds at Amwell Magna.

The river is also stocked four times a year with the highest quality brown and rainbow trout sourced from a trout farm which has been supplying trout since 1907.

The club is located in a gated and fenced area of great natural beauty, immediately adjacent to the 40 hectares of SSSI reserve containing Great Hardmead and Holycross lakes, managed by our friends Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust .
